By Terez Howard

You’re thinking, of course not! As a small business owner, you always want to look professional, even if your business is just getting its feet wet in the business world.

Well, let me ask you this. Do you have a business website? Is it equipped with the following sections:

  • About
  • Contact
  • Prices or Rates
  • Testimonials
  • FAQS
  • Portfolio, if applicable

Potential customers want to visit a handy, one-stop shop where you make it easy for them to decide to buy from you. Does your business website make it easy for people to hire you? You might think that you have everything people need, but if your site is lacking the basics listed above, you have some work to do.

But it’s not going to be perfect, so I’ll do it later.

Procrastination doesn’t get anyone anywhere. My 2-year-old plays the violin. Before you go applauding her as a little prodigy, let me be honest. She’s no Itzhak Perlman. She has the basics down. That’s about it. She can hold the instrument properly and get some sort of sound out of it. When she performs, like she did at a recital on Saturday, the crowd oohs and aahs at her performance, not because she’s a perfect player but because she handles the basics well.

If your website handles the basics well, your potential clients will ooh and aah at you. Even if they don’t hire you, they might remember how professional your website was and refer you to someone else. Never underestimate the power of word of mouth. It makes many sales possible.

Practice makes perfect

My daughter is only 2, but we hope she will continue practicing her violin for many years to come. She may even play as well as her father, a professional violinist. To get to that level, she must practice, practice, practice.

For your website to take that next step up, you have got to work at it. Maybe you want to add social networking links, a blog or e-book downloads to your business website. You get to that level with good old-fashioned hard work. Start small and build a professional-looking website, backed up with a professional attitude. Who knows? You could be the Itzhak Perlman of your niche.
