PostHeaderIcon How To Get Started Guest Blogging

By Terez Howard

When you are invited as a dinner guest, you don’t soil a host’s floors with muddy shoes, engage in rude conversation or cut your eyes at other guests.  You are respectful and thankful that you’ve been invited in someone’s home.

That’s the attitude to take when you start guest blogging.

Ask to write

You can shoot an e-mail or tweet to someone you know, like Jael talked about yesterday.  You can also contact a complete stranger.  You might send a message like this:

Dear So-and-So,

I’ve enjoyed reading your blog about freelance writing.  I would like to write a guest post for you about the challenge some freelance writers face finding well-paying clients and where they can be found.

If I send an e-mail pitch like this, I wait one week before checking in with a blogger again.  Then, I like to send another e-mail to make sure my first e-mail was received.  I wait one more week, and if I don’t hear from the blogger, I move on.

Not asking to write

Yes, you have the option of not asking a blogger to write.  You send a completed post straight to her.

When you do this, make sure your guest post was not already covered in the blog.  The post should be of interest to the audience of that blog and fit the blog’s general tone.

I’ve found that many are hesitant to give this a try.  However, I started guest blogging at Liz Strauss’s Successful Blog by following this very method.  It does work!

I follow the same two-week waiting period for this method as with the previous one.

Just do it!

Don’t let apprehension or fear of rejection stop you from giving guest blogging a try.  You will most likely be rejected at some point.  But the more you reach out, the more likely people will reach out to you.
